An Atheist's Disquiet
This page lists quotes from well know atheists and agnostics where they appear to be doubting their own beliefs or appearing to acknowledge the existence of a designer of the universe.
Christopher Hitchens (1)
"It’s called faith because it’s not knowledge.”
Did Niels Bohr have faith in his “Bohr Atomic Model ? He had no proof whatsoever that what he was describing was in fact real. How could he ? Even today, it is impossible to see an electron let alone back in 1913. But I assure you, Niels Bohr had plenty of “Faith” in his Atomic Model because of the "knowledge" he had in physics and through his experiments that led him to develop his Atomic Model. That same model is for most part still used today, particularly in academia.
In the same manner, Christians use science to prove the existence of a Designer. That designer is God. We have Faith in God through our knowledge and understanding of science.
Thus, this assertion is proven false !
Christopher Hitchens (2)
“Exceptional claims, require exceptional evidence.”
Can you provide evidence how something can come into existence from nothing ? (Explain the big bang theory)
The best explanation I have heard is that there was matter and antimatter (in equal amounts). In equal amounts… how convenient! Well just for arguments sake, “let’s take refuge in the security of consensus” and agree that there was equal amounts of matter and anti-matter….. But that still makes no sense in quantifying nothing ! If you have $100 in total wealth and at the same time you have $100 in debt, do you have nothing ? Of course not… you have $100 sitting in your wallet ! It is something. It is NOT nothing. From a financial perspective, it balances out as zero wealth, but at the end of the day, you still have $100 (something). Same applies with the Matter/Antimatter argument.
Thus, if you truly believe in the Big Bang theory, then where is your evidence that EVERYTHING came from NOTHING ?
Christopher Hitchens tells us that such an "Exceptional" claim requires "Exceptional" evidence.
Greg Graffin
An Interview with Scientific American in 2010, Greg Graffin, an Evolutionary Biologist who taught at UCLA and Cornell University.
Question: In your new book Anarchy Evolution: Faith, Science and Bad Religion in a World without God you talk about the "anarchic exuberance of life." What do you mean by that?
Response: The trick is: how do you talk about natural selection without implying the rigidity of law? We use it as almost an active participant, almost like a god. In fact, you could substitute the word "god" for "natural selection" in a lot of evolutionary writings and you'd think you were listening to a theologian. It's a routine we know doesn't exist but we teach it anyway: Genetic mutation and some active force chooses the most favorable one. That simply isn't a complete explanation of what's going on. We need to stop thinking about lawlike behaviors and embrace the surprises.
Stephen Hawking
Hmmmm.... Sounds like he is affirming Fine Tuning !!!
Stephen Hawking, British theoretical physicist, states, “If the expansion rate of the universe was different by one part in a thousand, million, million a second after the big bang, the universe would have collapsed back on itself or never developed galaxies.” If you change the expansion rate, even by that miniscule amount, we wouldn’t be here.
Robert R. Wilson
Was an American author, futurist, psychologist, and self-described agnostic mystic.
Robert R Wilson made the following observation regarding the realization that he and Penzias had discovered the beginning of the universe:
"Certainly, there was something that set it all off. . . I can’t think of a better theory of the origin of the universe to match with Genesis."
Dr. David D. Deutsch
Dr. David D. Deutsch is a British physicist at the University of Oxford. He pioneered the field of quantum computation by formulating a description for a quantum Turing machine, as well as specifying an algorithm designed to run on a quantum computer.
He is quoted as follows:
(1) If we nudge one of these constants just a few percent in one direction, stars burn out within a million years of their formation, and there is no time for evolution. If we nudge it a few percent in the other direction, then no elements heavier than helium form. No carbon, no life. Not even any chemistry. No complexity at all.

(2) If anyone claims not to be surprised by the special features that the universe has, he is hiding his head in the sand. These special features are surprising and unlikely.
